Can I Day Trade my Roth Ira?

Confused about the day trading regulations. When the market is volatile (like it is). Can I trade ETF’s in my IRA… buy and sell only once the same day, everyday? Will this trigger my account as a day trader? If so, does it matter?

I received a K-1 today for trading UNG in a ROTH IRA. Is this a mistake? Do I have to re-do my taxes?

I received a K-1 for UNG (an ETF on Natural Gas) today, March 21 (yes this is a pain since taxes are already done). Is this a mistake, receiving a K-1 for a trade in a ROTH? The trade was a loss, it was held for 4 days.

On the K-1, it does show profit 0% and loss 0%, even though there was a loss.

Under Section L it shows capital contributed during the year: ,911 (which is the amount of the trade including my brokerage commission). For withdrawals and contributions it shows the same figure in parenthesis (27,911). I sold UNG for 26,757, (not the previous figure) for a loss of over 1,000. Also, I did not withdraw or take any distributions from my ROTH, but do not have that much left in my account due to other trading losses.

Do I have to amend my taxes? Is this K-1 even correct?

Also, can I ever claim a capital loss from a ROTH? How much am I allowed to get back for capital losses if I lost a lot?

Any help understanding this would be appreciated.

                    Stock trading and tax consequences?

I recently started investing in the stock market. I initially started with the idea that I’d invest in 5 diversified ETF’s or Index Funds and just let it sit . . . . .the idea being I wouldn’t incur any tax penalties for a few years.

I got tired of waiting for those funds to get moving, so I sold those shares and am now invested in ~15 fairly diversified stocks and have been actively trading for profit (and losses, of course).

If things continue the way they are, I will hopefully have a nice profit . . . I’m just concerned that taxes are going to kill me. In the books I’ve read, there are two prominant themes:

                    1) Taxes + Fund Expenses + Trading Commissions will erode any profits you may have made trading. Just stay invested in a few diversified index funds and rebalance once per year.

                    or

                    2) If you’re paying taxes, it’s because you’re making money. It’s not a bad thing to have to pay taxes. Trade away.

Any thoughts/advice? Any good books on stock trading and taxes?

Should I sell my entire stock portfolio to fund a home purchase?

I would like to buy a home in the beginning of 2008 and currently have most of my money in a brokerage account in ETF holdings, which is about ,000.

My question is whether I should liquidate my entire portfolio to pay for the down payment. Would trading the portfolio for a down payment be a good investment? It would be hard to come up with the cash for a 20% down payment without selling off a good chunk of it.

Also, is it wise to keep the ETF’s right now or should I look for lower-risk investments if I plan on using the cash within a year? It is pretty well diversified and the returns have been decent these past few years.

By the time I plan on buying, I should have about 18-20k in cash savings in addition to the portfolio.

I am 21 years old so have some time to regenerate the portfolio, but just wanted to get your opinions. Any advice would help…thanks!
Thanks for the responses everyone! They are very helpful. The "home" that I’m referring to will most likely be a condo….and yes I am maxing out my contributions (and will continue to do so) in my retirement accounts.
                          Thanks!

Why is the market price higher than the closing price of a stock?

An ETF I’m looking at closed today on Friday at .60 a share. If I buy that stock at market rate, it comes up to be 78.50. Why is the market value so much higher for a given stock than the closing price? If after hours trading has affected the price, how can I keep track of those fluxuations? All the stock trackers I have only deal with times the US market is open. Thanks

Is it a good idea to invest in foreign stocks/etfs to hedge against the weak dollar?

I am considering purchasing foreign stocks/ETFs as I expect the dollar to continue to weaken. As I am purchasing within the US using dollars, is there any down side to doing that or should I be purchasing those same stocks from within the country of origin. eg. I want to buy UK financial stocks. I could transfer US dollars to a UK Pound account, and trade through a UK trading site. Or I could use my US trading account to buy those stocks through an ETF I found.

Can anyone explain which is the best approach and are there any hidden gotchas?

US government bonds that mature within 1 to 3 years with a yield of at least 4% per annum?

I would like to invest in US government bonds directly (only government bond index linked) and without involving securities that are indirectly related to US government bonds but only to the government.

When I was looking for government bonds, all I could find were other kinds of securities such as mutual funds which invest in government bonds as well as etf’s and etns which invest in government bonds, but not the government bonds themselves.
I am not interested in any other kinds of securities that are indirectly related to government bonds, but only in buying government bonds themselves.
The bottom line is, what is the trade symbols (Identification numbers) of the government bonds themselves ?
I am looking for US government bonds that mature within 1 to 3 years with a yield of at least 4% per annual with a coupon.

Can you please refer me to a list of trading symbols (Identification numbers) of Consumer-Price-Index linked US government bonds bearing a fixed interest of at least 4% per annual?

Which ETF's include a certain Stock?

I’m wanting to invest in some ETF’s (exchange traded funds) which are each made up of a collection of stocks. What I want to know is where can I find a financial search tool that will allow me to pick a stock I want to own and search backward to find out which ETF’s include that stock I want to own so I can choose one? Finding which stocks are owned by an ETF is easy, but thats very tedious trying to look up each ETF and drill down to their top ten holdings on say MSN moneycentral or other finance search engine. Any ideas or info on how to do this is much appreciated!

I have a trading strategy that is contingent upon small fluxiations in ETF’s like the PSQ. PSQ has an average daily trading volume of around 250,000 shares. Would the purchase of 300 shares be enough to affect the price of the stock by as little as 0.10-0.15%? Thanks for your response

Day Trading and/or holding: Is the QLD any better than other leveraged ETFs?

How well does it track the QQQQ over time? I realize that it gives double the performance of the Q’s, but with some leveraged etfs, the correlated index can go up and you would have been better off just buying the the non-leveraged product. Anyone have experience trading this a little or a lot and possibly holding it during a bull trend? I would like to day trade this, but if this etf went against me on an intraday basis, I would probably hold it for a while, assuming a bull trend is still intact. Also, if the market did turn bearish, would this not perform as well on the counter-rallies? I know that I asked a lot of questions, but please share your experiences with this (and QID). Thanks!

I hear that due to the way that they are calculated there is a probability of the price decaying? For instance can a ETF such as ERX, which is trading at around.98 ever see its passed price of around . Can a Financial ETF such as UYG ever see its passed prices in the -50 range (I know this is a long shot, given the current financial situation) Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Apparently UNG is a partnership and I was classified as a partner for the short time that I owned it. The trade was a loss, it was held for 4 days.

On the K-1, it does show profit 0% and loss 0%, even though there was a loss.

For withdrawals and contributions it shows the same figure in parenthesis (27,911). Also, the tax basis box is checked. I sold UNG for 26,757, (not 27,911) for a loss of over 1,000. I know that SDS is a double inverse of SP 500. Is there a single inverse short ETF other than SH, that has a higher volume of trading?

which form for ETF transactions capital gains?

first year i traded ETF’s with a brokerage account.
they sent me a "1099-CONSOLIDATED TAX STATEMENT". some of the funds paid dividends. they totaled the dividends i received, and listed all purchases and sales.
i am filling out my taxes at a free on line service.
do i put the dividends on the 1099-DIV, and the ETF’s on 1099-B?

1099-B seems to be set up for one sale. you enter date of sale and profit. do i total all my sales, or one 1099-B for each sale?
I have about 30 purchases and 30 sales, so i hope you are not going to say i need 30 1099-B’s.

                                                          thanks.
