Jesse Lauriston Livermore (July 26, 1877 — November 28, 1940), also known as the Boy Plunger, was an early 20th century stock trader. He was famed for making and losing several multi-million dollar fortunes and short selling during the stock market crashes in 1907 and 1929. While working, he would write down certain hunches he had about future market prices, which he would check for accuracy later. A friend convinced him to put his first actual money on the market by making a bet at a bucket shop, a type of gambling establishment that took bets on stock prices but did not actually buy or sell the stock. If I have so much negative equity left after trade in could I just get 2 cars instead of paying off the balance?

I have 2 vehicles I would like to trade in for 1 vehicle.. However both my vehicles, like everyone else in the US who buys a new car, have negative equity. So I’m trying to wrap my head around how this would work.

On my 2 cars I have pay off of k. Dealership is offering k for trade-in. So the following calculation in my mind should work. But I must be missing something as 2 dealerships have already turned me down.

New Car Price = 30k
Subtract
Positive Trade In Value = 22k
Equals
Left Over New Car Price = 8k
Add
Negative Equity = 20k
Equals = 28k
Finance on full price of New Car = 30k + tax license fees etc apply 2k down (difference between Calculation and New Car Price)

Still under what it would be if I walked in off the street and wanted to buy it outright. Should be like handing you 2k as a down payment and financing the rest. So not sure what I am missing. Must be some stipulation on doing it that way. The new vehicle wouldn’t even have negative equity on it. Still under the selling price.

So my question to you Finance guys is, why wouldn’t that work? Is there some stipulation where you can’t roll it like that?

I see what your saying in regards to the lender seeing it as 50k actually 30k (new car price) + 20K (Negative Equity), however in my mind the lender shouldn’t even see the negative equity.. The dealership already stated they would in give me the 22k for the 2 cars. You would think they would do the trade then go to the lender afterwards with just the new finance. But I think I just figured out from the dealership point of view that they would not be making any profit.

Dealership pays off 2 cars. It can turn and sell them for 35K (retail value) + 30k from the lender on my new finance, equals 65k subtract the 42k pay off they would have to make for a total net of K. So when you do the math this way the dealership actually loses 6k on the sale of their vehicle. Kind of crazy how the results differ.

Sigh, guess thats what I get for buying 2 new sports cars, just had baby and was trying to move into a 4 door vehicle. Problem is space not debt.
